Duorama: Support

A vintage film camera built for iPhone Duo.

Getting started

Duorama is built for iPhone Duo, and its waist-level finder needs iPhone Duo. Half-fold your iPhone Duo and hold it at your waist, flat half facing up. The half with the cameras stands up and faces your subject; the flat half is the ground glass you look down into. Press the shutter release beside the glass to take a photo, then turn the crank one full turn to wind on to the next frame. Closed, or opened out flat, the same camera works at eye level.

On any other iPhone with iOS 18 or later, Duorama works as an eye-level camera, without the waist-level finder. A LENS / SELF slide on the film back switches to the front camera: slide it to SELF and the glass shows you as the photo will be, not mirrored.

Tap the glass to raise the magnifier and focus. Swipe down on the glass to close the hood, and up to open it; the camera rests while the hood is closed. Push the film card up or down to change film. Tap the nameplate on the film back for Settings, where Finder, Hood at start sets how the camera begins: Open, Closed or As left. The first time you open the camera, four swing tags show you round it; Settings, About, Show the tour again brings them back.

Questions

Why aren’t my photos in Photos?

The photos of a roll wait in the camera until the roll is finished, like film waiting for the lab. At frame 12 the contact sheet asks you to Develop this roll or Don’t develop. Developing uses one roll and sends the roll’s 12 photos and its contact sheet to Photos. With no rolls left, Develop this roll opens the Buy rolls sheet. If you own Every roll, for good (the purchase called Develop Film in the App Store), each roll goes to Photos by itself when you finish it; turn on Save each photo right away in Settings to get each photo as you take it.

How do rolls work, and how many have I left?

Developing a finished roll uses one roll. Buy rolls in Settings, Developing, Buy rolls, or tap the ROLLS plate on the film back while you have some: one at a time or in packs of three or five, and your first roll costs less. Rolls never expire and work on any film. Settings, Developing shows Rolls left. Every roll, for good is one purchase that develops every roll by itself, so there are no rolls to count.

What does Don’t develop do?

It deletes the roll’s 12 photos and its contact sheet for good, after a warning: Delete this roll? Delete Roll goes ahead and loads a fresh roll; Cancel goes back to the contact sheet.

I bought rolls on another iPhone, or reinstalled the app.

Your purchases usually come back by themselves with the same Apple Account. If they don’t, tap Restore Purchases on the Buy rolls sheet or in Settings. The rolls you’ve already used are remembered in your iCloud, so the number left follows you to a new iPhone; without iCloud, that list stays on the iPhone. Refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

The finder shows the picture back to front.

Like a real waist-level finder, the glass on iPhone Duo shows the picture reversed left to right. Your photos are never reversed. Settings, Finder, Reverse the picture turns it off. On any other iPhone nothing is reversed, and the setting isn’t shown.

The shutter won’t fire.

After each shot the signal is red and the finder goes dark until you wind on: turn the crank one full turn. At the end of a roll, the contact sheet opens and the camera waits for your choice, Develop this roll or Don’t develop; after developing, New Roll loads the next roll. A closed hood also locks the shutter release: swipe up on the glass to open it.

The glass is covered.

The hood is shut. Swipe up on the glass to open it. A shut hood rests the camera, and Settings, Finder, Hood at start decides whether it begins open, closed or as you left it. On iPhone Duo, half-folding the phone opens a shut hood.

It says “Hold the phone upright”.

On iPhone Duo, half-folded and on its side isn’t a camera. Half-folded, the camera works upright, or upside down for the outer screen’s camera. Turn the phone upright and the picture is back.

How do I take a photo of myself?

On any iPhone except iPhone Duo, slide the LENS / SELF slide on the film back to SELF. The glass shows you as the photo will be, not mirrored. Slide it back to LENS for the rear camera.

Where’s the waist-level finder?

It needs iPhone Duo. Half-fold your iPhone Duo, hold it at your waist and look down into the glass. On any other iPhone with iOS 18 or later, Duorama works as an eye-level camera: the same film looks, rolls and controls, with a slide for the front camera, without the waist-level finder.

Can I use it on iPad?

Duorama isn’t made for iPad, but an iPad can run the iPhone version. It opens in an iPhone-size window, with the eye-level camera and the same purchases.

No shutter sound?

The camera’s sounds follow the Ring/Silent switch. Where the law requires the system’s own shutter sound, that one plays instead.

The camera or Photos isn’t allowed.

Open the iPhone’s Settings app, find Duorama, and allow Camera, and Photos (Add Photos Only). Photos waiting to be saved are kept safe in the meantime.
